Innovation and Vintage Merge at Bangladesh

Exhibitors at Bangladesh proved that vintage processes are not necessarily the best way to achieve vintage looks.

A total of 28 manufacturers from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Italy, Spain and China took part in the sixth edition of the Bangladesh show held in the capital Dhaka on Oct. 5-6.

With the theme “Vintage Recall,” the show placed a spotlight on the classic and vintage silhouettes and fabrications coming back into fashion. The show’s organizer, Sandeep Agarwal, said the theme is a “tribute to the vintage nature of denim” which he sees designers trying to recreate.

Through innovations in spinning, weaving and finishing, the show encouraged attendees to consider more sustainable practices to achieve vintage character, and to apply these distinct looks to fabric with high-performance benefits.

“Vintage Recall not only talks about the vintage era, but also why we need to go back to our traditional method of production in order to achieve sustainability in an absolute term,” he said.

The show supported these ideas with a video telecast from designer Lucia Rosin on the five steps brands can take to create a sustainable denim collection, and a workshop about the “natural ways of dyeing indigo.” The workshop was held by an artisan from Rajasthan whose family has been practicing this sustainable way of using indigo for over 500 years.

Bangladesh has significant potential in textiles and has become the largest supplier of denim products to Europe, surpassing China, according to Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) Vice President Fazlul Haque. The show’s attendees expressed their satisfaction with the expo as it will facilitate to achieve the $50 billion export target set by Bangladesh government for the year 2021.

In order to reach the goal, Haque urged the Bangladesh government to ensure uninterrupted gas supply, particularly in the denim factories, and encouraged stable gas prices and political stability.

Turkish Ambassador to Bangladesh Devrim Öztürk said the show will help create linkage between local and foreign companies that would strengthen Bangladesh’s denim sector.

“There are some good factories in the country and I hope the export of denim products from Bangladesh will see a big jump in the next few years,” he said.
