Calik Celebrates 30 Years with 30 International Designers

Calik Denim is celebrating 30 years of international business with Denim Loves Art, a socially-minded project involving 30 young designers from around the world.

The denim-inspired work will be revealed and exhibited at three special events celebrating Calik’s 30th anniversary. The collection will debut in Istanbul on Oct. 11, travel to Amsterdam for Kingpins Oct. 25-26 and then to Los Angeles on Dec. 6.

Designers from colleges such as Amsterdam Fashion Institute, Central Saint Martins, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, FIDM and Parsons School of Design were invited to submit designs and production plans for unique items including clothes, furniture, shoes and handbags with denim as the main material.

Projects were selected by WGSN’s Denim Director Dio Kurazawa; Lucia Rosin, Head Designer and CEO of Meidea S.R.L. Consulting Company; and Hamit Yenici, General Manager of Calik Denim. The selected candidates went onto produce their items, with all production, materials and travel to the three special events sponsored by Calik Denim.

“The evolution and success of our business over 30 years is something we wanted to celebrate in a way that suits our vision and so the idea of young designers creating 30 special denim works was born,” Yenici said. “Working with denim challenged their perception of the fabric and inspired them to create some outstanding pieces, which share and enhance the company’s vision as staying true to the ethos of denim, the ultimate egalitarian uniform originally invented for workers and worn by everyone.”
