Despite an unsuccessful first quarter in 2015, Gap has big plans for the future: The retailer is considering a brand-defining purchase, bringing the company to a new country and hosting a beauty brand.
The Times Square, Toys ‘R’ Us Takeover
According The Real Deal, Gap is in talks to take over all or part of the iconic Toy ‘R’ Us Times Square location, which the company is vacating in early 2016. The 110,000-square-foot space would reportedly be split between a Gap and an Old Navy. It’s long overdue, as Gap was looking at the same location 15 years ago, right before Toys ‘R’ Us signed the lease.
India’s First Gap Store
Gap opened its first location in India at the Select Citywalk mall in Delhi. The store includes collections for men and women, and includes GapKids and Baby Gap.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the offerings at the Gap store will feature more retro, logo-heavy styles, as the Gap logo became wildly popular after megastar Shahrukh Khan wore a branded hoodie in a ’90s blockbuster.
In order to enter the Indian market, Gap partnered with licensing company Arvind Lifestyle Brands, Ltd., which also brought Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein to the country. Gap plans to open 40 Gap stores in the next five years.
Birchbox in Residence
This summer, beauty subscription service Birchbox is opening seven pop-up locations in Gap stores across the U.S. At these locations, customers can purchase summer beauty products, build their own Birchbox, or purchase an exclusive 3-month subscription.
The Gap locations include Market Street, San Francisco; The Grove, Los Angeles; and 34th Street, New York City.
