Levi Strauss & Co. Honored by EPA for Chemical Safety

Levi Strauss & Co. was named a 2016 Safer Choice Partner of the Year by the Environmental Protection Agency as recognition for the brand’s work with the Safer Choice program.

Levi’s developed a program using the EPA’s Safer Chemical Ingredients List to select chemicals for its textile treatment operations.

Bart Sights, vice president of technical innovation, explained the specifics of Levi’s program on the brand’s blog, Unzipped. He said, “Levi’s created a scoring system to rate chemicals and chemical formulations based on human health and environmental toxicity hazard endpoints.”

Sights said that once the method was established, Levi’s brought the program to its supply chain, beginning with one garment finishing supplier and its chemical suppliers. Levi’s also put the program in place with the brand’s innovation processes and chemical management system.

Levi’s plans to expand the program this year, and the ultimate goal is to have all Levi’s suppliers using only chemicals that have been screened through the Screened Chemistry framework.
