From Pokemon to Hello Kitty, Levi’s nostalgic collaborations have traversed decades, interests and genres. The heritage denim brand’s latest partnership continues this trajectory by putting an artistic spin on a childhood classic.
The customizable Levi’s x Mickey Mouse x Keith Haring collection centers on Disney-related artwork from Haring, whose pop art is almost synonymous with the New York City graffiti subculture of the ’80s. Featuring his Mickey Mouse artwork from that era, the collection showcases Haring’s signature use of bright colors and unique animation.
The collection urges consumers to get creative as well with a series of customizable options.
The collection includes Trucker jackets with an all-over Mickey Mouse print, available in multi-color or black and white. Consumers have the choice to add custom features to the jackets, such as the collar, back panel and trim designs, while laser-printed artwork can be added to jeans. Consumers can select artwork that can be printed onto Levi’s T-shirts, hoodies and tops in a range of layouts and color combinations.
Levi’s has offered customization services at in-store Levi’s Tailor Shops since 2015. At select stores, shoppers can add elements such as patches, embroidery, chain-stitching, screen-printing and laser printing effects. Customizable options are also available through the brand’s website and app.
“As fans of art, and Keith Haring in particular, we wanted to do something that no other Keith Haring collaboration could do,” said Janine Chilton Faust, global vice president of design at Levi’s. “So we teamed up with our longstanding partner Disney to create this customizable collection, including a build-your-own custom Levi’s trucker jacket, that would showcase the expressive, explosive and playful power of Haring’s iconic Disney Mickey Mouse artwork from the ’80s.”
The Disney Mickey Mouse x Keith Haring customizable collection by Levi’s was available beginning April 8 on Levi.com, on the Levi’s App and in select Levi’s stores with Levi’s Tailor Shops. The collection retails for $25-$298. The Trucker jackets will be available exclusively on the app starting April 16.
This is Levi’s second collection that nods to original Mickey Mouse artwork. In January, the brand debuted a men’s and women’s line of tops, jeans and more that depict the character and friends talking to one another on the phone. Similar to the Haring drop, January’s collection features throwback Disney graphics against a brightly colored palette of yellow, blue and green.
Disney has made its mark in a number of denim collaborations, underscoring the nostalgic trends that have washed over the jeanswear market in recent years. Recent partnerships include American Eagle’s holiday collection and a collaboration with Paige Denim’s for a Create & Cultivate event.
