The Spring 2021 Levi’s Made & Crafted collection navigates the complexities of pandemic consumers’ wants and needs with the level of ease you might come to expect from a heritage brand with 140-plus years of expertise.
With sustainability at the forefront, the collection offers modern utility garments made with soft and loose constructions in calming sea-inspired colors.
More than half of the collection includes a sustainable component such as Tencel x Refibra, cottonized hemp and organic cotton, which the brand incorporates into denim bottoms, jean jackets and knit tops.
The line also boasts “Made in Japan” garments and fabrics developed especially for Levi’s Made & Crafted by Kaihara Denim Mill. Japanese fabrics are marked with a Japanese flag on the garment’s internal waistband, while “Made in Japan” garments are distinguished with a special foil embossed leather back patch.
Stylistically, the spring collection culls inspiration from the ’90s—a theme echoed in the recent reboot of Levi’s Red collection.
The women’s range offers looser fits such as the Column, a high-rise jean with a straight fit and wide leg opening, and the new Pleat Column, a roomier version with a center pleat. Loose silhouettes are carried into jackets, including the Oversized Tide Trucker jacket made with a cottonized hemp and the Resort Trucker, a cropped silhouette with “billowing sleeves.”
The women’s collection embraces femininity and “soft surplus” with details featuring lace, linen fabrication, ruching and tiny ties. Yellow and white striped denim mimics the look of traditional seersucker, while shades of tan, aqua and rose quartz are nods to seaside holidays.
“It is a mix of relaxed proportions evocative of the ’80s and ’90s, soft tailoring, and airy voluminous shapes set against a backdrop of authentic, vintage-inspired denim,” said Jill Guenza, VP, global women’s design at Levi’s. “The pretty details and ethereal fabrics define a new femininity for Levi’s.”
For men, the brand centered its attention on soft, streamlined styles, authentic finishing and “artful sail mending-inspired details.” The styles reflect a “considered ease” that mixes California with the French Riviera,” said Janine Chilton-Faust, global VP of men’s design.
Key denim items include the 551Z Authentic Straight, a straight-fitting jean with a wide leg opening, and the Loose Straight, a jean with a more relaxed shape.
Prints, meanwhile, elevate denim and non-denim pieces. The men’s Drawstring Trouser, a relaxed pant made with organic cotton, features a blue check print, while classic camp shirts are refreshed in striped and checks. Nautical rain coats and an assortment of crew neck sweatshirts and T-shirts with regatta stripes underscore the coastal theme. Plaid prints are lasered onto Trucker jackets.
The spring Made & Crafted line is available in Levi’s stores, on the Levi’s app and on the brand’s website now. The collection retails for $58-$398.
