Levi’s Made & Crafted Remixes ‘Denim Family’ from the ’50s

When it’s deliver-or-die, supply chains become the lifeblood of a company. To that end, the fashion industry has embraced technology to navigate today’s hyper-complicated supply chain, with myriad solutions shaping the first, middle and last mile. Call it Sourcing 2.0.

Levi’s Made & Crafted line is known for paying homage to historic Levi’s designs and reinterpreting them for the modern day. The Spring/Summer 2022 collection, Denim Family, does just that with a collection of utility- and sportswear-inspired denim for men and women. The designs are inspired by the original Levi’s Denim Family collection from the 1950s, a midcentury collection that outfitted the entire family.

This time around, the modernized pieces center on genderless inky indigo designs made from the same lightweight 2×1, grey weft selvedge denim fabric—a softer construction than that of traditional 3×1 denim. All styles are made with 100 percent cotton.

Designed to be mixed and matched, the collection spans a long anorak smock with a front patch pocket, a simple patch pocket jacket and a tunic-style cape, to wide straight leg pants, a short with an ultra-wide hem and a cropped overall. There’s also a chambray shirt with a knee-length hem and a loose-fitting short-sleeve chambray shirt—both made entirely of organic cotton.

Branding is consistent across all items and features a special logo patch designed using the historic Levi’s sunset logo.

“This is the most exciting and conceptual part of Levi’s Made & Crafted this season,” said Paul O’Neill, design director for Levi’s Made & Crafted and Levi’s Vintage Clothing at Levi’s Strauss & Co. “It’s a more fashion-forward capsule that feels fresh and modern, but that still links with Levi’s history. We tapped the family idea behind the original 1950s collection because it made it feel inclusive and for everyone, and then re-imagined what Denim Family would look like if Levi’s were making it today.”

Levi’s Made & Crafted collections from last fall also featured utilitarian looks built on a foundation of sustainability. Fall/Winter 2021 saw “high and loose” jeans in autumnal hues and a matching oversized Trucker jacket, as well as a cropped faux leather jacket in forest green. That same season, the line introduced jeans and jackets made from recycled denim featuring technology from Re:newcell and proprietary fabric Circulose.

The Levi’s Made & Crafted Denim Family collection ranges from $248-$498 and is available exclusively on the Levi’s app. Bottoms are offered in sizes 28-38, while tops and other items are available in XS-XL. Select pieces, such as the cape and the long shorts, are offered in a more limited size range.
