Diesel will begin the new year without its long-standing creative force.
Artistic director Nicola Formichetti announced on Instagram Monday that he’s stepping down from his role at Diesel after five years.
In a caption of a photo of himself alongside Renzo Rosso, president of Diesel’s parent company, Only the Brave, Rosso wrote, “I’m sad to announce that at the end of this year I will be stepping down as artistic director of @diesel. Thank you all at diesel for the most amazing 5 years!! And thank you @renzorosso for allowing me to be creative. It was so much fun!!! Wishing Diesel all the best for the next chapter.”
Rosso followed up with his own Instagram post thanking Formichetti for a “great 5 years.”

Diesel has not announced Formichetti’s replacement. The Italian-Japanese designer joined Diesel in 2013 as the brand’s first artistic director. Formichetti previously served as the creative director of Thierry Mugler and worked with Lady Gaga.
The unconventional denim brand is in a state of flux. In July, Alessandro Bogliolo stepped down from his role as CEO to move to Tiffany & Co. Diesel made the most of the vacancy by inviting fans to enter a social media contest to fill in the seat for a week at its Breganze, Italy headquarters.
