ThredUp and Frame Partner on Upcycle Program Promoting Circularity

ThredUp has a tempting offer for denim heads who want to shed their closets of excess clothing.

The secondhand e-tailer announced Wednesday a partnership with premium denim brand Frame that encourages shoppers to trade in their gently worn clothing in exchange for Frame shopping credit.

To make the trade, shoppers request online a Frame x ThredUp UpCycle Kit. Once they fill a box with clothing items they wish to donate, consumers can attach a ThredUp-provided shipping label and drop it off at a local USPS or FedEx Office.

The program has already proven to be a success with over more than hundred kits requested from the resale platform during the morning of the launch.

The goal of the program is to promote a circular economy. According to ThredUp, when shoppers resell even one article of clothing, they’re extending its life by an average of two years and reducing its footprint by 82 percent.

ThredUp currently offers the same cash-out promotion with a number of partners, including Banana Republic, Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch and Reformation—the latter of which kicked off the program in 2018. The partnership with Frame follows news that ThredUp will work with Brooklyn-based designer Daniel Silverstein (a.k.a. Zero Waste Daniel) to create a zero-waste collection derived from secondhand garments and other castoff textiles.

While consignment and fashion resale have grown in popularity over the years, the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed these models further into the spotlight. ThredUp saw an influx in users in April when many throughout the U.S. were under lockdown as a result of the coronavirus and turned to household activities such as wardrobe simplifying. The resale platform’s research showed customers ordered 6.5 times as many donation clean-out kits in April than they did in previous months.
