Men’s denim trends may move at a slower pace than women’s. However, premium denim labels are edging their male consumers toward newness by offering a strategic mix of core product and novelty items for Spring ’18.
Rivet checked up on five familiar labels at Project in New York City to see how they plan to maintain denim’s rebounding sales and build a deeper interest in performance and fashion denim.
7 For All Mankind’s Spring ’18 collection meets the demand for lightweight, comfortable denim with an authentic look. The premium denim brand’s collection is based on comfort stretch fabrications with vintage and selvedge appearances. 7 For All Mankind Account Executive Jordan Hagel noted that Japanese denim is a strong influence in the denim market right now, adding that the brand uses hollow Japanese threads to achieve light weights with a heavy, traditional look.
Mavi gives its tried-and-true fits a cosmetic update for Spring ’18. The brand brings newness with seasonal colors and washes, including the Bleached Brooklyn and the Mid Grey Brooklyn, and texture through details like rips, patches and heavy whiskering. Mavi’s collection also includes linen shorts and pants.
AG returns to its Californian roots for spring with vintage washes, relaxed fits and bleached looks. The new 17 Years Pottery jean is designed to look and feel like it has been worn for years, complete with patchwork details, distressing and frayed hems. AG draws color inspiration from the ocean for its new indigo line of shirts. The new Everett linen pant and short offers a Malibu vibe, while a relaxed, beachy-look is carried into a range of versatile jackets.
Lindsey McKeand, DL 1961 junior account executive, reported that the brand’s patented X Fit remains a go-to fabrication for Spring ’18. However, the brand continues to elevate its men’s offering with new and improved fabrications, including the Calvery, a breathable fabric ideal for summer months. Core items in DL’s spring line feature clean lines and a cool color palette. For novelty, the brand offers nostalgic denim pieces, like jean jackets, military trousers and unique dyes like blue overdyed black.
According to Paige PR and Marketing Director, Allie Geller, comfort drives men’s sales. The brand bulks up its performance offerings for spring with Transcend Vintage. The new four-way stretch fabric has a distinct vintage look and is offered in a variety of washes and colors, including retailers’ favorite acid and mineral washes. As for non-denim options, Paige debuts new chambray shorts, and a new tropical print called the Palisades.
