Zara is building out its circular denim collection to include baby and children.
The Inditex-owned retailer released a collection of children’s denim made in accordance with the Ellen MacArthur’s Jeans Redesign program, a set of guidelines defined by more than 80 industry experts across academia, brands, retailers, manufacturing and more to make jeans fit for a circular economy.
Zara said the “denim collection is designed with its whole life cycle in mind.” Fabrics used to make the collection include a minimum of 98 percent cellulose-based fibers and contain at least 5 percent recycled content from textile origin to reduce the consumption of virgin materials.
Most fabrics in the line are made with 80 percent cotton and 20 percent recycled cotton.
All components that are added to the fabric can be easily disassembled for reuse or recycling. For the children’s collection Zara said it added removable buttons and tried to avoid metal rivets or zippers.
Interior pocket bags include information about how the garment is designed to be recycled.
Styles in the Jeans Redesign x Zara collection for kids closely mirror the comfort and utility trends seen in women’s fashion. The unisex line includes a worker jacket, cargo jeans with an elastic waist, wide-leg relaxed fit jeans and loose fitting jeans with a ripped knee.

For baby, the collection offers a denim overshirt, overalls, pull-over denim shirt and a collared dress with pockets.
Sizes begin at 9 months for baby to 14 years in children’s. The collection retails for $25.90-$39.90.
Zara merchandises the denim pieces with cotton navy and cream striped long-sleeve tops and waffle knit tops.
The children’s collection follows Zara’s first Jeans Redesign collection that launched in September. It offered women’s jeans, midi skirts, shackets and jumpsuits.
Jeans Redesign has been widely adopted by global brands. Zara’s fast-fashion competitors H&M and Primark have released circular capsule collections, the latter launching with children. Other participating brands include Frame, Outland Denim, Reformation and Unspun.
