Celebrities helped close out a decade of denim in style.
Here’s a look back at celebrities’ boldest denim statements and favorite trends for the year.
Jeans and a denim jacket were a go-to uniform for celebrities in 2019. Actress Ella Balinska played with genres by mixing denim culottes and a relaxed jean jacket with gathered sleeves. Model Irina Shayk and actor Austin Butler kept it cool in an all-black denim look and black boots.
Kim Kardashian West turned heads in a denim and leather ensemble by Burberry. The British label’s chief creative director Riccardo Tisci bucked tradition when he created a denim corseted top with puffed sleeves and jeans with blue leather chaps. Lizzo made shorts a holiday look when she performed in denim hot pants and a Santa Claus-inspired duster for a performance in Los Angeles. And MTV’s European Music Video Awards was a hotbed for brazen denim outfits, including sequin-embellished jeans and a denim suit, sans shirt, worn by Chilean actor Jorge Lopez.
Cargo jeans were a mainstay among young celebrities. Bella Hadid and Gigi Hadid embraced the functional looks, often mixing the utility jean with a stomach baring top or satin jackets. Musician Ellie Goulding wore bleached cargo jeans trimmed with black zipper details. A jean shirt with patch pockets added a heritage feel to Ellen DeGeneres’ casual look.
For off-duty days, celebrities like Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon turned to Mom jeans. The laid back style was a staple in famous wardrobes, paired with tanks in the summer and cozy sweaters in the fall. Actress Mila Kunis added a SoCal vibe with distressed knees. Courteney Cox added a striped long-sleeve tee for a sporty look. Yara Shahidi elevated the jeans with a deconstructed men’s shirt. Canvas or vegan leather white sneakers almost always punctuated Mom jean outfits.
Naomi Campbell, Kacey Musgraves and Ashlee Simpson were among the fashionistas that gave wide leg jeans a chance in 2019. The voluminous bottoms were frequently paired with oversized coats in statement making prints and colors, a la Musgraves and Simpson.
Paris Jackson channeled her inner flower child when she wore bell-bottom jeans and stacked beaded necklaces. Lenny Kravitz didn’t disappoint with his stacked flare jeans, denim vest and mesh shirt statement at the MTV Music Video Awards.
Denim made a surprising appearance at some of the most formal occasions in 2019. Paloma Elsesser wore a denim peplum dress to the Met Gala in May. Marion Cotillard put her own spin on denim gowns with the dramatic denim robe she wore to the Cannes Film Festival. And skinny jeans added coolness to Yara Shahidi’s sequin gown.
