New York Fashion Week serendipitously aligned with one of the season’s biggest (literally and figuratively) outerwear trends—the puffer coat.
While there’s always at least one snow day during New York Fashion Week that throws a wrench in fashionistas’ curated schedule of outfits, this year the crowd was in luck as the nylon jacket borrowed from the outdoor segment is chief among both designer and streetwear trends.
Cropped puffer coats in bold colors like red, purple and blue were styled with jeans, chunky knit sweaters and monochromatic hoodies. Relaxed or straight fit jeans were a common companion for the voluminous coats. Jeans with reflective taping added a technical feel, along with hikers and chunky Dad sneakers.
Puffer coats with leather-like finishes and styles with zip-away sleeves refined the utilitarian look. Designer handbags and white boots with a wedge heel dialed up the fashion.
And Fashion Week goers showcased how high-end labels are putting their own spin on the practical puffer.
Prada’s pink puffer with retro après ski piping was paired with a transparent Chanel purse. Fendi’s oversized, logo-covered puffer cocoon was the statement piece in another wise mom-inspired sweater and jean look. Acne Studio’s collaboration with Fjällräven—a blue and orange camouflage concoction—was a lively contrast to an all-grey ensemble.
