Summer 2019 brought with it a frenzy of milkmaid tops, ’90s nostalgia and tie-dye everything. And the season was ripe for bold denim statements from celebrities.
Lady Gaga summed up the spirited feeling of the season with a custom jacket and jean shorts set by Versace for New York City’s Stonewall Day celebrations. Gaga paired the color blocked jacket and beaded fringe short with gold Versace baubles and rhinestone-covered rainbow-hued thigh-high boots.
DJ Diplo stepped out in a Canadian tuxedo, topped off with a personalized belt buckle. Both Jada Pinkett Smith and Karolina Kurkova chose to pair skinny jeans and heels with vibrant yellow jackets. Busy Philips relived the early ’90s with an oversized stone wash trucker, romper and pink hair. And Bella Hadid was among the first to rock looks from Rihanna’s Fenty line, including a raw Japanese selvedge jean jacket.
The classic cutoff short was a mainstay. Actress Emma Roberts wore hers with a basic tank and leopard print moccasins. Newlywed Sophie Turner tapped into a ’90s look with short-shorts, a cropped camp shirt, checkerboard print socks and slides. Country singer Miranda Lambert hit the streets of New York in a Rolling Stones tank top and jean shorts with braided pocketing details. And model Gigi Hadid—always a first to try new denim silhouettes—wore cutoff Bermuda shorts with a faded tee and sneakers.
Jeans with a split knee were a popular go-to for casual summer style. Gigi Hadid and Mila Kunis wore boyfriend styles with tees and tanks, while Los Angeles Lakers’s Kyle Alexander Kuzma skinny jeans with double split knees. The mom jean maintained its status as a favorite with celebs like Hilary Duff and Dua Lipa each putting their own summery spin on the style.
And hinting to fall trends, actor Austin Butler in Levi’s sported head-to-toe black denim in a Levi’s Trucker jacket and jeans.
