The latest innovation in the ongoing value-added transformation of denim fabrics has properties for electronic and conventional usage.
Directa Plus, a producer and supplier of graphene-based products for use in consumer and industrial markets, has entered into an exclusive collaboration agreement with Arvind Ltd., one of India’s leading textile manufacturers, to infuse the high-performance benefits of Directa Plus’ G+ graphene-based products into its denim fabrics. The company makes its chemical-free graphene-based products at its own factory in Lomazzo, Italy, with what it calls an “exportable” manufacturing model that allows for the set-up of additional production at customer locations to reduce transport costs, waste and time-to-utilization.
According to Directa Plus, its graphene-based products can be used in a variety of ways to alter or enhance the properties of conventional denim fabrics and to make smart clothing for different end uses and environments. By incorporating G+ products within textiles, wearers benefit from thermal and electrical conductivity and bacteriostatic properties of G+—things like thermal regulation, heat dissipation, energy harvesting, data transmission—with no odor effect.
“Technology plays a vital yet invisible hand in determining the performance, fashion quotient and functionality of the denims we develop,” Aamir Akhtar, CEO of Denims at Arvind, said. “The use of graphene in denims is absolutely new and will yield some of the smartest, most widely used fabrics in the years ahead…We want our key customers to be among the first to experience and enjoy the advanced, new-age clothing we will create with Directa Plus.”
Arvind Denim produces more than 100 million meters of fabric and 6 million pairs of jeans annually for brands like Levi’s, Wrangler and Tommy Hilfiger. The $1.5 billion company’s business has also evolved into an IP-led design house with several patented technologies and products. Arvind said the collaboration with Directa Plus will enhance its capabilities in innovation and research, and accelerate its transformation into a technology-driven company.
“The incorporation of our Graphene Plus will further differentiate Arvind’s denims by providing unique features and performance enhancements,” Giulio Cesareo, CEO of Directa Plus, said. “Consumers can enjoy these advantages safe in the knowledge that our products are hypoallergenic, non-toxic and sustainably produced.”
