Soorty Achieves Alliance for Water Stewardship Gold Status

Soorty’s latest certification marks a sustainable achievement for both the company and the region in which it operates.

The Pakistan-based textile mill recently achieved one gold certification and one core certification status of its business from the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS), making it the first company to attain this status in the country across all sectors. Soorty’s certification is especially notable, as Pakistan is at high risk for water scarcity—the United Nations ranks it one of the lowest in terms of regions with access to safely managed drinking water.

The AWS is a global membership collaboration that promotes a universal framework for more sustainable local water resources. AWS certifications are awarded on a points basis and cover three levels, including core (0-39 points), gold (40-79 points) and platinum (80 points or more). To achieve core certification, companies must meet five key standards: good water governance, sustainable water balance, good water-quality status, healthy status of important water-related areas, and safe water, sanitation and hygiene for all.

Soorty’s gold certification indicates the company has “pushed its water stewardship performance to the next level.”

Equipped with innovative water recycling plants, Soorty reuses the majority of water consumed during everyday operations. The minimal waste that’s produced is then treated so it’s classified as drinkable water before it makes its way back to land.

The company also carries a gold certification from Cradle to Cradle for its Pure D fabric, which is made using proprietary Zero Waste Water dyeing technology, and was an early adopter of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign project, a universal framework for circular denim production. When Soorty joined in 2019, the organization extended its guidelines requiring fabric mills to implement ZDHC (Zero Discharge of  Hazardous Chemicals) wastewater guidelines, including testing and reporting, and to produce no more than 0.025 cubic meters of wastewater per yard.
