When Nordstrom made its New York City debut last month with a 47,000-square-foot men’s store, there was just one jeans brand that could encapsulate the retailer’s long-standing reputation for top-notch customer service and quality: Levi’s.
The heritage denim brand opened its first permanent shop outside of a Levi’s store—the Levi’s Tailor Shop—inside Nordstrom’s new store in Manhattan’s Columbus Circle. The shop-in-shop anchors the men’s denim floor, offering customers all of Levi’s high-end collections, including premium Red Tab, Levi’s Made & Crafted, Levi’s Vintage Collection and Authorized Vintage.
In an interview with Levi’s blog Unzipped, Dan Dahl, VP of specialty wholesale at Levi Strauss & Co., said the shop-in-shop presents a unique opportunity for two brands with momentum in the market to join forces.
“We are excited to be partnering with one of the few retailers expanding its footprint in a competitive marketplace,” Dahl said. “Nordstrom’s commitment to customer service is unparalleled. They’ve trained their customers to expect a high level of service, and now that service has extended to authentic denim tailoring.”
The shop at Nordstrom breaks away from Levi’s traditional retail strategy for its premium collections, which are primarily sold at specialty boutiques and high-end wholesale retail in the U.S.
“This is the best litmus test to see if this works. And it’s already working,” Dahl told Unzipped. “These first few weeks have been so unbelievable that Nordstrom had to hire more tailors. They’ve truly been a phenomenal partner.”
Additionally, customers have access to free chain-stitch hemming for their Levi’s, or they can get embroidery, novelty chain stitching, patches and other customized work for an extra fee.
The Levi’s Tailor Shop complements the department store’s overall focus on personalized service. The store boasts made-to-measure suiting, personal stylists, watch customization by Shinola and will even customize a fragrance label to a shopper’s liking.
