Saks Fifth Avenue Takes a Chance on Expanding into Canada

Though recent numbers show that department stores have been losing traction, store executives seem to be betting against the odds. In February, Saks Fifth Avenue will expand into seven new stores, including the retailer’s first move into Canada.

Saks Fifth Avenue announced the openings of two new stores in Toronto, at CF Toronto Eaton Centre on February 18th and CF Sherway Gardens on February 25th. Both stores will offer women’s designer ready-to-wear, men’s sportswear, tailored clothing and contemporary sportswear, along with designer handbag shops, a 10022-SHOE salon and jewelry and beauty selections. Some of the brand offerings will include Dior, Valentino, Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent, Chloé and Céline.

The retailer will debut a service initiative called Saks at Your Service at the new Canadian locations. This service will deliver purchases to places such as homes, offices and hotels, anywhere and at any time. The store will also bring The Fifth Avenue Club to Canada, offering personalized styling appointments with trained consultants.

The Saks beauty counters will offer makeovers, on-the-go facials, fragrance personalization and red carpet treatments. Both stores will hold regular events, including fashion shows, personal appearances by designers and trunk shows.

To celebrate the stores’ entrance into Canada, Saks is hosting a series of events at both locations through the opening weeks. CF Toronto Eaton Centre held a cocktail reception to benefit the National Ballet, and following the ribbon-cutting, fashion designer Phillip Lim will make an appearance.

The Saks Fifth Avenue store in CF Sherway Gardens, opening one week later, will host two in-store cocktail events, one with American Express and the second in partnership with Trillium Health Partners.

Marc Metrick, president of Saks Fifth Avenue, said, “After more than two years of planning, our entry into Canada is truly a milestone for our company. We cannot wait to bring the Saks experience of an elegant edit of the best designer names, coupled with distinctive, personalized service to Toronto.”
