The juniors and young contemporary markets want on-trend denim looks, too, and embellished offerings do the trick in ways that help them stand out from their older siblings.
Vendors at the Fame trade show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan this week, offered an array of hemlines for bottoms, with a wide selection of finishes in keeping with trends on display at Coterie, which caters to the higher-end contemporary consumer.
For outerwear, both shows also featured the iconic jean jacket, particularly in their use of distressed denim. The Fame vendors, however, targeting the younger contemporary market, focused more on adding a bit of spark and glitter for a glammed update to the look.
At Elan, which was showing both Resort 2019 and Fall/Winter 2019, owner Galit Savir, said animal prints and camouflage were favored on denim jackets, which wholesaled for $30. What did attract more attention were the embellished jean jackets with faux pearls or rhinestones. The added feature raised the wholesale price point to $50 for each jacket option.
Over at Vocal, a denim vest–looking more like a jean jacket with the sleeves ripped off–featured petite studs in rows down the front panels. The vest wholesaled for $21.50, according to Ju Cho, sales representative for the L.A.-based apparel firm.

Buyers looking for bottoms paid particular interest to its black denim jeans with a tapered leg and rhinestones down the side. Another favorite was a jean with leg lacing. On average, the jeans wholesaled for between $18.50 to $23.50.
