Light, bright, California-inspired denim designs are expected at the next edition of Denim Première Vision (Nov. 18-19) at Barcelona’s Fira Montjuïc.
Each season, Denim Première Vision’s fashion team sets out create all-encompassing trend stories from thread to button. This season’s trends are inspired by California’s deserts—from grainy, gritty finishes and washed-out colors to fluid and airy wovens, festival-friendly floral embroidery and glittery rivets.
Lightweight, thin fabrics and open constructions suit the season’s new wider silhouettes. “This season, it’s also strongly developed in pants which is quite rare and innovative,” said Marion Forêt from the Denim Première Vision fashion team. She noted that culottes, skirts, flares and bell bottoms (even for men) are picking up traction. As the ’70s trend continues into S/S 17, Forêt said buyers can expect to see wood accessories, more fringe and raw edges in lighter weights and earthy colors like khaki.
Iridescent accessories play into the season’s fantasy denim, which Forêt said has been developing for several seasons. Prints, jacquard and dobbies carry the trend into a new direction. Meanwhile a new team of washed-acid colors (light pink, turquoise and pale blue) is this season’s pastels.
Mills are also focusing on sculpting and cooling fabrics for S/S 17. Forêt said there’s a shift from denim with a sporty appearance to denim with actual performance attributes. “We see more sculpting constructions, cooling fabrics, breathable fabrics. Moreover, we still see a lot of stretches. Each season, we see improvement and innovation to make stretch denim fabric more performance and more shaping,” she said.
The show will host 87 exhibitors spanning weavers, manufacturers, launderers and finishers to accessory makers and technology developers—a group that Forêt described as “the most influential in the sector.” Six new exhibitors join the roster, including Advance Denim, Ariteks Boyacilik, Baykanlar Tekstil, Firemount Textiles and Hyosung Corp. The show is expected to attract 4,000 international visitors from denim pure players, as well as premium and high-end fashion labels, designers and luxury brands searching for quality, exclusivity and design inspiration.
Attendees can dig deeper into S/S 17 fashion and performance trends. On Nov. 18, denim industry expert and consultant Michelle Branch will launch the show’s first Denim Trend Tasting where attendees can learn more about seasonal influences and get a firm understanding of the S/S 17 season. On Nov. 19, the Denim Première Vision team will offer a master class to better understand the key points and aesthetic influences, from fabrics and finishes to fits and accessories, depicted in the show’s popular Denim Trends Area.
