Celebrity Street Style: Back to the ’90s

Loose-fitting jeans, destroyed denim and late ’90s styling are back in the closets of celebrities.

While the demise of skinny jeans played out on social media last year, influential celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Dua Lipa and Travis Scott stepped out in jeans that align with Gen Z’s call for roomier fits.

How celebrities are styling these jeans smacks of recent nostalgia. Jenner recently summed up the ’90s aesthetic when she was seen in Los Angeles wearing relaxed jeans with twisted side seams. The updated basic jean was styled with a cropped tie-dye top, bucket hat and shoulder bag—other hallmarks of the decade.

Hailey Bieber opted for an outdoor-inspired look when she paired her baggy jeans with a fleece-lined nylon top and orange-accented sneakers, while Addison Rae chose high-waisted comic book print jeans for a night out in L.A.

Rapper Travis Scott wore slouchy faded jeans with a metal key chain looped below his left knee. Dua Lipa paired her relaxed black jeans with a Y2K-take on a cardigan set, surreal handbag and slides. Rihanna nailed decade’s color scheme by pairing denim with neon and checkerboard-printed sunglasses.

The Bajan songstress dressed like a local when she donned a pair of laidback cutoff jean shorts during a grocery store run in L.A. The shorts featured slight distressing and a dusting of white paint. Paint and bleach splatter denim, in general, is gaining momentum. Usher wore slouchy jeans splashed with bleach to Nobu Malibu, while Jaden Smith sported a slimmer paint-splattered jean to Justin Bieber’s birthday party.

Bieber, meanwhile, has been seen wearing an oversized light wash jean jacket.

Outside of L.A., celebrities favored more vintage-looking jeans. Relaxed-fitting jeans have become part of models’ off-duty looks in New York City. Kendall Jenner embodied the ’90s by pairing her blue jeans with a white tee and chunky Prada loafers. New moms Gigi Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski both stepped out in jeans, a blazer, sneakers and colorful socks. Hadid cuffed her ripped loose jean, showing off a pair of bright yellow socks, while Ratajkowski’s high-waisted cropped jean framed her red socks.

Slouchy suede boots emphsized the look of Sarah Jessica Parker’s stacked jeans. Even actress Sofia Vergara, who is known for wearing and selling figure-hugging jeans, has traded in her skinnies for more relaxed fits.

The Biden family received the memo as well. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden sported a pair of straight fit jeans alongside her Gen Z granddaughter dressed in cropped distressed jeans.
