Technology and how it relates to creating a sensory experience will inspire women’s wear fashion for Spring/Summer 2020.
In a webinar co-hosted with UBM Fashion, Melissa Moylan, Fashion Snoops vice president, creative director-womenswear, described how new curiosities, from tarot card reading to virtual reality, are swaying fashion brands to incorporate artificial colors, technical components and bold washes into their collections.
Driving this trend, which Fashion Snoops calls “Circuit,” is the growing acceptance of so-called “mainstream” psychedelics used on a broader scale, pop culture’s intrigue in cults and the popularity of immersive experiences. In terms of visuals, Moylan said these experiences “transport you to another place, even in retail concepts.”
Fashion aims to mimic that feeling. Bright, digital color is crucial for Circuit, Moylan said, noting that neon limeade, green and pink will add an artificial jolt to looks. Purple, lilac, yellow and soft pink will balance the electric shades. “Blue is also a great way to cool down the very warm saturated palette,” she added.
Patterns are expressive, Moylan said, especially dye effects like tie-dye or gradients. “You’re dialing up the intensity of something with a tie-dye, but if it’s more like a gradient, then it could become softer,” she explained. “That’s where we will see pastels.” Tropical motifs, wave effects, reptile prints in unnatural colors and modified stripes also live here.
In denim, Circuit calls for relaxed straight leg jeans with dye effects or acid wash, which Moylan said adds a “digital effect.” Bike shorts are updated in stretch denim fabrications. The skinny fit shorts go just below the knee and is accented with side vents. Acid wash wide-leg jeans are also on the upswing, she added. Square pockets and unfinished hems are among the smaller details to watch.
Other key items include slip dresses of varying lengths, track pants with a matching bra top or bomber jacket, voluminous lightweight parkas, nylon windbreakers and boxy camp shirts with bold prints. Meanwhile, long-sleeve cropped tops and high-waist bike shorts are ideal applications for playful colors in the young contemporary market, Moylan added.
Nylon drawstring pouches and belt bags continue trend. However, Moylan said to look for upgraded versions that integrate charging properties for phones. Neoprene materials add a sporty feel to top-handle totes—a look that is carried into neoprene slip-on sneaker boots for the season redone in pop colors.
