The first signs of spring are driving consumers to search for one of this season’s biggest footwear trends: denim shoes.
Google searches for “denim shoes” reached a year-long high this month, as images of denim sandals, slides and sneakers begin to roll out across online retailers like Zappos, DSW and Amazon. And it will likely ramp up once summer parties and festival season peak.
Denim has become an unexpected core fabrication for heritage women’s wear brand Bill Blass. The brand introduced heeled sandals and slides covered in frayed denim two seasons ago, and it has expanded the collection each season with new colors and textures. Spring ’18 options include color denim slides, eyelet denim heels and denim sandals embellished with baubles and crystals. It’s a look that appeals to a broad range of retailers like boho stalwart Anthropologie and regional department stores like Dillard’s—both of which picked up the collection.
For Spring ’18, denim footwear styles run the gamut from espadrille sandals and effortless slip-ons, to elegant stiletto sandals. Chambray is a go-to for brands like Toms and Michael Kors, which add the lightweight summery material to wedge heels. Keds is even kicking canvas for chambray.
Espadrilles with denim tie-dye uppers suits Emu Australia’s relaxed, boho vibe. Minnetonka pairs its signature Southwest styling and hardware with the all-American fabric, while fashion brands like Seychelles, Vince Camuto and SJP Collection decorate their denim shoes with ultra-feminine pearls, hints of shimmer and decorative knots.
