Gen Z sparked controversy when it canceled skinny jeans earlier this year. Now, they’re calling on the return of low-rise jeans and initiating yet another war on what’s hot and what’s not in the world of denim.
A product of the Y2K era, low-rise jeans were a staple among pop stars and the then-teens who worshiped them. Low-rise jeans gave way to skinny jeans and higher rises by the mid-2000s, but as with other trends from the early aughts, like platform sandals, midriff-baring tops and chunky plastic jewelry, Gen Z is rediscovering and reviving the once-dominant styles.
According to global fashion search platform Lyst, year-on-year searches for low-rise jeans are up 57 percent—specifically those with flare and baggy fits.
From slouchy boyfriend fits to ankle-skimming skinny jeans, here’s a look at how to introduce low-rise jeans back into your closets.
