The dark side of science serves as the inspiration behind Fashion Snoops’ Fall/Winter 20-21 women’s wear trend story, “Gattica.”
As one of the four trend stories Fashion Snoops vice president of creative, Melissa Moylan, outlined during a recent webinar with Informa, Gattica evokes the feeling of being “immersed in a new genetic code,” and examines fashion through a “futuristic lens,” she said.
Adaptable designs and holographic and shiny surfaces are among the elements that help bring this sci-fi fashion story to life. The color palette, Moylan described, mashes together neon pink, purple yellow and green with blue, orange and a “heat glow red.” And at the base of the story are nocturnal colors, like dark teal and gray.
Prints like wavering lines, orbital swirls and windowpane check (updated with neon flourishes) help tell the scientific story, while more literal space imagery conveys a more direct story.
In denim, Gattica is expressed through high-rise straight leg jeans in bright colors, denim shirts with rounded sleeves and mid-rise skinny jeans. The strongest look, Moylan said, is cropped with pintuck detailing along the front of the legs.

Other key items include coats with boxy shoulders and interior quilting, slim sweater dresses made from ribbed knit and oversized hoodies with extra-long sleeves and untraditional graphic placement. Puffer coats and cargo pants feel new in shiny or coated materials. Fitted turtlenecks are inspired by activewear and the parka is updated with “fashion color application” and ultra-lightweight fabrications, Moylan said.
Slip-on sneakers with drawstring closures, hybrid boots with contrast active soles, and boots with bold zippers and metal toe caps enhance the theme’s futuristic vibe. Acrylic earrings and geometric sunglasses add a whimsical touch. The trend also calls for a mini pouch bags with chain straps, vertical clutches and slouchy bags with crystal embellishments.
