G-Star Raw unveiled its first men’s and women’s footwear collection since it ended its decade-long licensing agreement with UK-based manufacturer Overland Shoes at GDS in Dusseldorf, Germany on Wednesday.
The collection, designed to complete the denim brand’s modern workwear aesthetic, melds inspiration from the company’s archive of military and work apparel, footwear and equipment with its own distinct street flavor. “We’ve made sure the DNA of the brand is incorporated. We’re proud of our designs,” said Project Manager Madelon Hullegie at GDS.
Highlights include the Guard Collection, a range of shoes and boots with a sleek metatarsal guard and contemporary rivets; the Labour boot, a classic pebbled leather lace-up; the Arc sneaker made with a parachute-inspired upper and a cinched topline; and the Myrow rubber boot, which Hullegie said is based on a military overboot from the ’70s.
A serious palette—navy, black, dark brown, olive and merlot—helps ground the collection. Some styles for women are less directional with just hints to G-Star’s work look. For example, a merlot Chelsea boot is accented with a smattering of decorative rivets on the side. Other styles incorporate just vintage-inspired stitching. The entire collection is denim friendly.
Footwear has been a successful segment for G-Star Raw for the last 10 years, however Hullegie said the category has never been a full focus until now. After a successful run with Overland, Hullegie said it felt like it was a good time to invest in footwear with a dedicated design, sales and marketing team. The Fall ’16 G-Star Raw collection will be available worldwide.
