Austin Footwear Labs Releases a Line Made from Recycled Tires

Austin Footwear Labs released a line of sandals made from more than 50 percent upcycled scrap tires.

The sandals are made from APX, a patented material created by Austin Rubber that takes tires at the end of their useful life and turns them into usable rubber.

Both the men’s and women’s line feature two styles, the ’21 and the Classic. The ’21 features a nubuck leather strap printed with a 1921 map of Austin, and both shoes feature an EVA midsole and footbed. The shoes cost $70 per pair.

Austin Footwear Labs President Fitz Lee said, “Every year, 300 million scrap tires are generated in North America alone, and it is our mission to provide an economically competitive and earth-friendly alternative to junking them.” He added, “We are setting a new standard for footwear where true sustainability matters as much as quality, comfort and style.”
