Cole Haan’s Wingtip Oxford Gets a Streetwear Update

Cole Haan tapped streetwear designer Jeff Staple to bring a street-style sensibility to its new, limited-edition wingtip oxfords.

The Staple ØriginalGrand Ultra combines Cole Haans signature craftsmanship with distinctive styling, resulting in a “revolutionized” wingtip oxford.

“I’m lucky to work with their innovation team and play with their technological innovations as they are developed,” Staple said in a statement, noting his studio’s years-long partnership with Cole Haan. “I want to create products that have a special feeling but are totally wearable on an everyday basis.”

Each Staple ØriginalGrand Ultra is packed with a high-volume dual-density footbed composed of Cole Haan’s GrandFoam material, which offers two levels of foam density designed to give a soft feel with each step while including enough cushioning and springback to increase energy return.

To give the Staple x Cole Haan shoe a sock-like feel, the company added an internal stretch bootie and padding in the heel and tongue to improve individual fit reducing the traditional break-in period.

The limited release of the ØriginalGrand Ultra wingtip includes black leather and camo suede colorways with an added pop of Staple’s signature Pigeon Pink in each model.

The Cole Haan x Staple ØriginalGrand Ultra launched on July 9 in select stores and online, retailing for $180.

The launch comes on the heels of Cole Haan’s scrapped $100 million IPO, which it was forced to shelve as a result of pandemic disruption, according to Reuters.

And the Jeff Staple collab marks the company’s latest attempt to diversify from its classic roots. In June, Cole Haan stepped further into the performance footwear market with the Zerøgrand Overtake and Zerøgrand Outpace, taking advantage of a growing consumer interest in personal fitness and running.
