Footwear Brands Debut Faux-Products for April Fools’

Rivet's 2020 Denim Circularity report takes a deep dive into how the global denim industry is plotting its circular future amidst a worldwide pandemic.

The first day of April brought a strange fashion forecast. The day known for pranks has not slipped retailers’ notice, and brands have advertised some strange new products for the spring, including Reebok’s fragrance inspired by workouts, Ted Baker’s electronically adjustable heel, and Miz Mooz’s shoe designed to replace the selfie stick.

A Winner’s Scent
Reebok reported the launch of their first ever scent, swět, distilled from drops of perspiration from fitness enthusiasts in the company. A provocative 15-second teaser trailer showing sweating athletes accompanied the product launch. In a statement, Reebok vice president of global brand communications Yan Martin commented on swět, “It has a powerful profile, bursting with top notes of salt and underscored by a rich vinegary base. Why smell like woodlands, meadows and lilies when you can smell of human?”

What Goes Up…
Ted Baker seemed to beat out Apple to premiere wearable tech when they revealed a heeled shoe that will sync with your phone to adjust the height of the shoe’s heel. According to the brand’s website, you can connect your shoes to the Adjustable Heels app via Bluetooth and grow your heels from two to six inches in seconds. Not a function to try on the go!

3.. 2.. 1.. Kick!
Another techie footwear innovation came from Miz Mooz. The brand debuted their “Selfie Shoe” Wednesday morning on Today with Kathie Lee and Hoda. The shoes feature a port on each foot for your phone and an internal button to press with your toe. A promotional video by the brand shows a user lifting her leg to face level to snap a pic — prospective users better start limbering up.
