In the Showroom: Latigo

The Seventies are calling — according to Ralph Lauren, Fendi, Missoni and just about every other influential designer that sent denim, fringe, rusty hues and suede down its Autumn/Winter 2015 runway — and women’s footwear brand Latigo is answering the call with a breezy, free-spirited collection inspired by the ambassador of bohemian style, Stevie Nicks.

After consecutive collections that emphasized short boots, the brand is aiming higher with versatile styles that reach above the knee, like the Magpie, a soft suede boot with a tapered heel. The boot, available in black, rust, gray and chocolate, features a touch of back lacing that can be worn loose and cuffed. Prominent pops of lacing is also present in a grouping of tall boots, including the knee-high suede Alabama with leather cord laces up the front and the shorter Eden. A crop of short boots with a deconstructed shaft is accented with leather cords that wrap around the ankle, including the Portland — an oxford/boot hybrid that pulls the laces from the front to back and back around.

That game of Twister is carried throughout the collection, primarily in the form of leather braiding, which crisscrosses around the suede Dosha boot with an angled top-line and the Paz distressed leather boot with multiple braided leather straps. On heels, the brand adds braided cord laces on clog-inspired silhouettes, including the Cabo, a suede shoetie with teardrop cutouts.

Crochet and whip stitching trims a number of casual styles. The Gala, a moccasin-inspired ankle bootie, plays into the ’70s hand-craftsmanship movement. Wooden clog heels keep that kitsch look alive on suede sandals in deep pine green and on ankle strap heels trimmed with scalloped leather. A three-piece collection of squish-able flats offers a cool and relaxed option for weekend dressing, with some embellished with bohemian embroidery.

On the sleeker end of the collection, Latigo revisits the basics, like fuss-free leather ankle boots in smooth black leather and a lender mid-height Al boot in foggy hues of rust and chocolate. A collection standout is a simple flat mule with an almond toe in nude, cocoa and black.
