The Look: Denim Dudettes

Rihanna and Manolo did it. So did Roger Vivier. Now the denim shoe trend is trickling from designer to street, changing the vocabulary we use to describe footwear. Silhouettes are now “cuts.” Colorways are “washes.” Embellishments should be called “trims.”

We saw the start of the denim movement last spring, mainly as chambray espadrilles and ’70s platforms that sometimes skewed costume-y. For Spring ’17, brands are toning down the all-American look with classic silhouettes like Vionic’s pointed toe flat and and Cat Footwear’s dual material boots. These very wearable styles will undoubtedly be broken in by women seeking a lightweight alternative to summer suede.

True to jeanswear’s versatile nature, these shoes can be dressed up or down. The shoes can stand as the strong neutral when merchandised with the season’s nautical stripes or bohemian sandals. Or, they can be the star of their own show with celestial embroideries and cutouts, as seen by All Black and Seven Dials.
