Opening Ceremony Collab Gives Hoka One One a Streetwear Makeover

Deckers’ break-out performance footwear brand, Hoka One One, is pairing up with high-concept luxury boutique, Opening Ceremony, for a unique collection of sneakers with streetwear appeal.

The line will be released in three capsules over the next five months.

It’s a “modern take on Hoka’s signature design” the companies said in a statement, and Opening Ceremony’s eclectic styling will appear in minimalist colorways with futuristic accents.

Opening Ceremony, a label worn by stars like Rihanna, Chloë Sevigny and Spike Jonze, has been known to sell apparel for upward of $2,000 for a single item. However, Hoka’s current position as one of the fastest-rising running brands in recent memory, made the decision to pair its upscale expertise with Hoka’s mainstream appeal easy for Humberto Leon, co-founder of Opening Ceremony, and his team.

“HOKA is an innovative brand that marches to the beat of its own drum, balancing design and function in a distinctive way,” Leon said. “At Opening Ceremony, we have always prioritized individuality and bold design, so this partnership was a natural fit.”

The $185 Hoka x OC Bondi, a “max-cushion” road-running silhouette released Friday is an adaption of the traditional “Bondi 5” Hoka style. The Hoka x OC Bondi will be built with Hoka’s EVA midsole and the brand’s signature cushioning, which features its “Meta-Rocker” sole technology, which the company says helps the runner transition smoothly through the heel to create a fulcrum effect, similar to that of a rocking chair.

The next capsule is scheduled to drop on Dec. 5, with the Hoka x OC Tor Ultra Hi trail running shoe, available for $260 at retail. The trail-runner, according to Hoka, has the support of a hiking boot with the comfort and traction of a running shoe, thanks to the triple-density midsole and an outsole equipped with Vibram Megagrip lugs for heavy-duty traction. The silhouette will have a full-grain leather and textile upper supported by an eVent waterproof bootie for versatility in a wide range of weather conditions.

On Feb. 6, the Hoka x OC Clifton training shoe will make its debut, retailing for $150 to complete the capsule. According to the brand, the last leg of the collaboration is an iteration of the Hoka One One “Clifton 3,” with a leather upper and colorful accents to capitalize on the classic “lifestyle look.”

“At Hoka, we act boldly and aim to do the unexpected, and we collaborate with partners who operate and think the same way,” Wendy Yang, president of Hoka One One, said. “Opening Ceremony has staked out their place in the industry with head-turning designs and adherence to its principles of exploration and friendship around the globe. We are thrilled to combine our perspectives with theirs for this exciting new collection.”
