Puma unveiled a pair of collaborations this week, one inspired by last year’s hit video game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and the other infused with late ‘90s nostalgia.
The sports brand’s collection with the Australian skate label Butter Goods will arrive first. The extensive footwear and apparel range—full of bold colors, baggy cuts and technical fabrics and finishes—will be “all about an appreciation for vintage sports marketing,” Puma said, harking back to “the heyday of sporting clubs, vintage tennis teams and bold ‘90s skateboard merch.”
The sneaker lineup will include one of Puma’s most iconic ‘80s basketball silhouettes, the Slipstream, brought back in a leather upper with perforation detail. The shoe will come in black and white options, with green nylon piping on the formstrip, a co-branded tongue and suede detailing. The corduroy Puma x Butter Goods Basket VTG—released in cream in June, when the two brands first announced their partnership—will return in two additional colorways, blue and orange.
The corduroy detailing will extend into the pair’s apparel line. Sets of corduroy track top and pants will come in two colorways: emerald green and cream and navy and orange. Other apparel items will include sweats, graphic tees and polos “adorned with retro designs.”
The Puma x Butter Goods collection will drop on Puma’s website and at Puma stores and select retailers Saturday.
Puma’s Animal Crossing collab is scheduled to arrive two weeks later. Taking cues from last year’s hit New Horizons game—now the 15th best-selling video game in history and the second best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch—the collection reimagines streetwear silhouettes with natural colors and graphics from the cutesy franchise.
The sneaker lineup features three of Puma’s most distinctive footwear silhouettes. A beige rendition of the Suede includes a triple formstrip with printed graphics on the top layer, translucent sole with graphic imprint, tongue label with debossed co-branding and leaf hangtag. The Animal Crossing x Puma Wild Rider sports a beige nylon upper with an Animal Crossing print, a translucent formstrip on the side and an embroidered leaf on the heel. Puma’s Future Rider—constructed with nylon, canvas and suede overlays and featuring Animal Crossing designs—closes out the sneaker pack.
The Puma x Animal Crossing: New Horizons collection also includes short- and long-sleeve tees, hoodies, shorts and sweatpants, all in the game’s signature color palette. It is scheduled to drop Sept. 18 on Puma’s website and at select retailers.
Earlier this month, Puma announced it would be joining forces with one of TikTok’s most popular stars, Dixie D’Amelio. The Hollister collaborator will reportedly work “on many exciting projects” with Puma, including a collection of her own that is set to release next year across Foot Locker’s family of brands and on Puma’s website.
