Skechers Pays Tribute to the 90s With Retro Fashion Sneaker Collection

Skechers is going back to the good old days of the ’90s.

Looking to celebrate the quirky ’90s fashion that gave the brand its start, Skechers released a collection of retro styles that will include Skechers Roadies, Skechers Retro Cleats and Skechers Heartbeat silhouettes.

The footwear brand has already dropped the first capsule of the new collection, featuring four colorways of its chunky Skechers Roadies sneakers. Complete with a jagged and fashionable extra-chunky sole, the Skechers’ Roadies will be available in red, white, blue and black. The first capsule is already available in stores and through the Skechers’ e-commerce channels.

After its founding in 1992, many of Skechers’ early styles were designed for utility and performance. As a result, its early lineup was full of logger boots and skate shoes. However, with the release of these three retro styles—beginning with the Skechers Roadies in 1994—the history of the brand was changed for good.

“Building off the chunky sneaker trend dominated by our Skechers D’Lites collection, we felt it was the perfect time to bring back our first fashion sneakers that started it all—Roadies, Cleats Retro, and Heartbeats,” Michael Greenberg, president of Skechers, said in a statement. “We’ve seen fashionistas gravitating towards ‘80s and ‘90s style. Reintroducing these three designs as part of this fresh Skechers Heritage revival collection is sure to create a new generation of fans for our most iconic Skechers styles.”

The Roadies are, themselves, inspired by another portion of the Skechers history. Its lugged outsoles come directly from the Skechers Sport Utility logger boot. The Skechers Cleats Retro styles that came after in 1996 were even chunkier, with a raised platform and enlarged outsole.

Following the Roadies drop will be the launch of the Skechers Cleats Retro style later in May. The Skechers Heartbeats, a style of hightop sneaker with a unique heel, will be released in August. Skechers said shoppers should watch out for additional colorways to be released for all three styles throughout the summer and fall.
