Teva Goes Hipster with Opening Ceremony Collab

Practical outdoor footwear maker Teva and hipster fashion label Opening Ceremony might seem like strange bedfellows, but the two are joining forces for their fourth collaboration.

On Monday, the brands announced in a statement that they would be coming together to release three limited-edition footwear offerings, set to drop during March and April.

The silhouettes were inspired by the idea of urban exploring, building upon Teva’s iconic styles with a new, futuristic look and feel. In shiny metallics and brights, the assortment combines Opening Ceremony’s avant-garde expressiveness with Teva’s sensible style.

The first product drop on March 5 will be the Opening Ceremony x Teva Hurricane Sock, which harnesses the geeky-cool aesthetic of the socks-with-sandals trend. The fully knit upper is made from shiny Lurex yarns and is engineered to pull on over the foot. Adjustable straps allow for a more customized fit, Teva said, though it wears like a sneaker because of its enclosed upper. In two monochromatic color ways of black and green, the unisex style retails for $150.

“This collection is special to both brands as Opening Ceremony’s passion for expression and Teva’s utilitarian aesthetic were able to be combined to create three styles that are stylish, yet functional,” Anders Bergstrom, Teva’s general manager, told Sourcing Journal.

“This collaboration marks [the brands’] fourth together, dating back to the first in 2014,” he added. “We are thrilled to see this partnership continue, and believe that each brand’s perspectives on creativity and innovation are what make it so successful.”

In the joint statement, Opening Ceremony co-founder Humberto Leon said that he and co-founder Carol Lim had been excited to partner with Teva initially in 2014 after having grown up exploring the California wilderness with the brand’s products.

“With this collection, we wanted to continue taking Teva’s innovative, functional designs to create something even bolder than we had before,” he added.

The collaboration’s second drop will consist of a Flatform Universal—a take on Teva’s well-recognized strappy sandal style—and the Hurricane XLT2 Gladiator, which will both be released in the coming weeks.

The collection will be available for purchase on both brands’ websites, at Opening Ceremony stores, and at select retailers across the globe.
