Are you classy, controlling or live in a fantasy land? Modeurop’s color forecast for Spring ’17 could double as a Cosmopolitan cover line but the resulting combinations lay the groundwork for a creative and cheerful season of footwear.
At GDS in Dusseldorf, Germany last week, the German trend forecasting group outlined the season in three distinct stories: refining, gardening and controlling.
Refining focuses on subdued and sophisticated colors that allow high-quality, luxury materials to sparkle. Materials with a glossy and shiny finish are juxtaposed to matte and translucent pieces. Monochromatic combinations make a quiet statement. Gray is prominent, from pearly gray and shell to titanium, Modeurop reported. Powder pink, camel and brown adds warmth to the otherwise cool and industrial theme.

Gardening is the season’s perennial brights story, incorporating geranium red, kiwi green, lavender, blue, terracotta, golden yellow and soft blue. The colors are pulled from flower beds, wheat fields and oceans, but Modeurop noted that color schemes are more imaginative than a traditional nature-inspired story. The color story combines elements from the digital world and from the past for the ultimate fantasy world. The scheme is tinged with retro, nostalgia and kitsch. Meanwhile, iridescent, glossy and synthetics materials “amplify” colors.

Controlling taps into the athleisure trend, offering a palette full of deep and dark shades of blue, traffic light red and olive green. The theme veers toward fall, but is brighten by pops of white and hemp. Expect to see this moody color story to be accented with oxidized or patina treatments, industrial-inspired metals or used in new iterations of camouflage.
