Adidas and Parley, the makers of Ocean Plastic made from upcycled marine plastic debris, have set a goal to create 5 million pairs of Adidas x Parley footwear by 2018. The 5 million pairs will rescue 55 million plastic bottles from polluting coastal environments.
The new goal is in addition to Adidas’ goal to create 1 million pairs in 2017. The brand launched the Parley ‘White Flag’ shoe earlier this month, designed to highlight the global coral bleaching crisis.
Adidas and Parley continued their efforts to draw attention to ocean conservation by hosting the World Oceans Day 5k on Thursday, where more than 550 runners took to the streets of New York City in support of the oceans.
The inaugural run was in conjunction with the first Adidas x Parley global sports digital movement, Run for the Oceans, on the fitness app, Runtastic. Run for the Oceans is a free digital run that invites people to take action and make an impact in the world. As of June 8, runners ran the equivalent of circling the world eight times.
