Intertek is enhancing its testing facilities in Shanghai. The quality solutions provider announced Monday it has doubled its physical lab space to offer a more comprehensive testing for the leather and footwear sectors in the region.

Enhancements to the facility include advanced leather and footwear laboratory testing equipment, including the James Slip Resistance Tester, GB Non-marking Tester and Leather Optical Microscope. For leather, the lab is better equipped for chemical testing and identification of leather. The expansion also includes further development of the professional footwear engineering team, to provide technical guidance on EU, U.S. and China footwear regulations and testing methods, as well as buyer’s requirements and suggestions for preventive measures or improvement for materials or whole shoes, the company stated.

China represents a significant opportunity for Intertek. The country is both the largest footwear exporter and consumer of footwear in the world. The company said the expansion of its Shanghai lab is a “very important part of the strategy to provide our footwear customers the highest-quality local service backed by our global network.”

Intertek’s network includes footwear laboratory and branches in key footwear production and trading countries like Guangzhou, Xiamen and Ningbo. As a result, the company said China’s footwear manufacturers, traders and brands can benefit by having convenient access to its services during peak seasons for footwear sourcing.
