A new pair of Nike sneakers was one Massachusetts man’s get out of jail card.
On Thursday Framingham District Court Judge Douglas Stoddart ordered Jason Duval to pay an outstanding $450 in court costs from a 2012 drug case, or face jail time. However, Duval said he did not have the money due to legal fees stemming from a divorce.
Judge Stoddart, who considered Duval to be a flight risk, offered him an alternative. According to the Metro West Daily News, Stoddart told Duval, “If you can come up with a creative idea to convince me that you’ll come back, I’ll work with you.”
Duval came back with a pair of new Nikes, a Christmas gift valued at $85, in exchange for his release. Judge Stoddart accepted the shoes and told Duval he would get the sneakers back after he paid $100 in four weekly installments, or did 10 hours of community service by Jan. 13.
No word on the model of the Nikes.
