Leslie Gallin’s Top 5 Shoe Trends for Spring ’18

From statement-making sneakers to gender-less silhouettes, Spring ’18 promises to be a diverse season for footwear.

“Many of the most coveted styles are embracing comfort and functionality. This can be seen in the feminine yet practical silhouette of the kitten heel. Booties have remained a staple as have sneakers. However, designers are using bold colors and embellishments to elevate the look,” said Leslie Gallin, president of footwear at UBM.

With a pulse on the fashion footwear industry, Gallin shares her insider’s point-of-view on the key trends to look for at FN PLATFORM (Aug. 14-16) in Las Vegas.

Embellished Sneakers
After several seasons of dominating runway and ready-to-wear trends, embroidery, appliques and patches are trending in footwear. “Embellishments are making their way onto the casual-cool sneaker,” Gallin said. “The added flair dresses up this comfy style for a modern, fashion-forward look.”

Kitten Heels
For Spring ’18, women’s brands are embracing the kitten heel as an alternative to low block heels. “The low heel trend is staying put. This traditional silhouette has become the season’s winning style allowing for both comfort and sophistication,” Gallin said.

Gallin says loafers have been elevated to “cult status.” Offering the perfect balance of feminine-appeal and menswear inspired, Gallin said the loafer trend can be found in a variety of styles. “Think bold colors, block heels and pointed toes, just to name a few,” she added.

Men’s Casual
When it comes to men’s footwear, keep it simple with sophisticated colors and comfortable silhouettes. “From work to weekend casual, this style is the epitome of versatility,” Gallin said.

“One of the biggest and best shoe trends—the bootie—has proven itself throughout all of the seasons and continues to be a closet staple,” Gallin said. “Look out for new styles with embroidery, pearl details or metallic colors.”
