Leslie Gallin’s Top Footwear Trends for Spring ’16

As footwear buyers flock to Las Vegas this week (Aug.17-19) for FN Platform, WSA@Magic, Project and more, all eyes will be on the next big trends for Spring ’16. From comfort-oriented silhouettes to retro heels, Leslie Gallin, president of footwear at UBM Advanstar, shares her top six shoe trends for retailers to test their luck with for Spring ’16.

Penny Loafers
Penny loafers are this season’s chameleon. With a broader range of consumers becoming increasingly comfort-minded, the unisex silhouette is expected to get a lot of play from buyers seeking both dress and casual product. Distressed leathers and suede offer relaxed options, meanwhile the style cleans up nicely with patents, prints and metallics.

It is no secret that gold, silver, pewter and the rest of the metal family are modern neutrals. For Spring ’16, designers are spicing things up by mixing metals, adding glitter and introducing new metallics in candy colors. Rose gold will continue to reign as fashionistas’ favorite.

Heel Heights
Expect to see more heel height options. As brands tell retro stories with kitten heels, tap into the athleisure trend with flatforms, or go au natural with wedge espadrilles, buyers will have their picking of heels to satisfy their customers’ preferences.

Leather and suede booties continue to dominate Spring ’16 collections. The new staple pairs effortlessly with romantic and bohemian dresses, or with jeans for an edgier vibe. This is one item that consumers are ready and willing to invest in.

Woven and leather materials bring texture to this season’s crop of sandals, booties and sneakers. The handcrafted look can be subtle with natural materials and an earthy palette, or offer a modern twist to uppers with bright and bold colors.

Retro Revival
Spring ’16 welcomes feminine styling from the ’40s and ’50s. The ladylike trend—with rounder toes, kitten heels and slingback silhouettes—are a refreshing break from the chunky heels and athletic bottoms that has swamped the footwear market in recent seasons.
