Who says sneakers can’t change the world?

Following the announcement earlier this month that Nike would be auctioning off 89 limited-edition self-lacing Mag sneakers for charity, the company announced today it had raised $6.75 million.

All of the money will be donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which works to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease. Famously worn by Fox on the silver screen, 88 Nike Mags were given away through an online draw, with the 89th and final pair to be auctioned off at the Michael J. Fox Foundation’s benefit gala, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s,” Nov. 12 in New York City.

“Thanks to Nike, we’ve raised a boatload of money for research and we’ve had tons of fun while doing it,” said Michael J. Fox. “We’re grateful to everyone who’s engaged in our work and we welcome those who have come to learn more about us through this amazing partnership.”

The draw ran from Oct. 4-11, with each entry counting as one $10 donation. Nike also revealed donations in the last 12 hours of the draw were matched dollar-for-dollar by an anonymous donor. The lucky winners were notified on Oct. 17.
