The total number of homicides in New York City is up five percent from 2014, and the city’s homeless population is growing, however the MTA announced Monday steps to make the concrete jungle’s streets a little safer—at least for those pricey stilettos.
The MTA said it is implementing sidewalks with “high-heel friendly” grates made with slip-resistant surfaces and smaller gaps. The updated grates are part of the city’s East Side Access Megaproject that will bridge Grand Central with the LIRR and allow Metro-North Railroad’s New Haven Line to access Penn Station.
Some parts of the Upper East Side, home to Schutz, Guiseppe Zanotti, Christian Louboutin and more, are already benefiting from the new gates.
