Out of This World: Studio Swine Designs Meteorite Heels

Design duo Alexander Grove and Azusa Murkami of Studio Swine used modern-day technology to create a pair of Space Age footwear. Inspired by the comet landing of the European Space Agency in November, the UK design team set out to craft shoes in the form meteorites.

Using 3D scanners to make 3D files of rocks in the Natural History Museum’s meteorite collection in London, the designers paired traditional shoe-making skills (i.e. leather lined insoles) with the technology to craft the rock-shaped heels.

The shoes’ lightweight aluminum foam upper—a foam that creates a lot of volume with very little material—creates a sense that the shoes are floating in outer space. Typically, aluminum foam is hidden inside luxury cars and buildings for sound insulation.
