Peabody Essex Museum to Host V&A’s “Shoes: Pleasure and Pain”

The Vivienne Westwood platforms supermodel Naomi Campbell famously tumbled in on the runway and avant-garde designs worn by Daphne Guinness are some of the teetering styles that will be on display at the “Shoes: Pleasure and Pain” exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Mass.

The museum will host the exhibit, organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, beginning Nov. 19 through March 12, 2017.

The exhibit includes more than 200 pairs of shoes ranging from celebrity sneakers to elaborate vintage designs. The exhibit also examines the cultural significance and transformative capacity of footwear, as well as the latest advancements in footwear manufacturing that are allowing designers to tap into new creative realms.

Footwear has been the focus of a several recent museum exhibits. Last year the Brooklyn Museum hosted footwear exhibits: “Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe” and “The Rise of Sneaker Culture.” Both exhibits have traveled throughout the U.S.
