Reef Launches Third Collection with Masafumi Watanabe

Surf lifestyle brand, Reef, releases its third capsule collection M.W. x Reef, with Masafumi Watanabe, designer of Bedwin and the Heartbreakers, April 28 in Tokyo.

The 9-piece collection draws inspiration from 1950’s SoCal, with big leaf prints and clean lines.

“I’m inspired by life on the beach—camping on the beach, or spending all day surfing in Southern California,” said Masafumi. “As you can see, there are military details like functional pockets and quality materials in the collection for a surfer on the move, exploring up and down the coast.”

“We designed this third collection around a spring release and were inspired by Reef’s deep roots in surf culture,” said Tom Cooke, Reef VP of footwear. “Specifically, we looked at vintage California surfing from the 1950’s-1970’s as a point of reference. It’s simple, timeless surf wear that’s been elevated through Masafumi’s choices around comfortable, quality materials and details.”

Masafumi’s signature detailing appears across the collection, with fig-leaf prints connecting pieces like button ups to boardshorts to Reef’s signature rubber sandals. The brand dishes out a new Voyage leather sandal with a cork deck—an homage to Californication.

“Masafumi designed classic, timeless styles not only in silhouette, but also in detail, fabrication and wash and bound the entire collection together through print,” said Eric Gigler, Reef director of design and merchandising “For this collection we dialed in the fit to be closer aligned to the Reef athletic fit, versus the smaller, more tailored Japanese fit of past collections.”

The collection features the Mission M.W with Reef Swellular XT technology for extra traction, with military influences seen in the camo-green colorway.

Sandals start at $25, and the collection is available online and in select retailers.
