Timberland Debuts “Bottle to Boots” Collection

Timberland is dabbling in new sustainable materials. The VF Corp.-owned brand introduced a new line of footwear, T-shirts and bags made in collaboration with recycled fiber company Thread, using fabric made from plastic bottles.

The five men’s shoes are made with Thread’s Ground to Good fabric, which uses 50 percent post-consumer recycled PET, a 50 percent recycled PET mesh lining and an outsole made of 15 percent recycled rubber. Styles include 6-inch canvas boots, hiker chukkas and mixed media boots in a light earthy color palette. Shoes retail for $75-$160.

“The Timberland X Thread collection is incredible proof that style and sustainability can go hand-in-hand,” said Colleen Vien, Timberland director of sustainability. “This collection delivers good with every fiber, not just by recycling plastic bottles that would otherwise end up littering the streets, but also by creating job opportunities and cleaner neighborhoods in Haiti. Consumers can feel good about pulling on their Timberland X Thread boots or backpack, and know they are making a positive impact in someone else’s life.”

Timberland’s partnership with Thread is part of its roster of sustainable efforts that span Earthkeepers to VF’s recently launched Forest Derived Materials Policy aims to avoid the issues associated with deforestation.

Thread, a Certified B Corporation based in Pennsylvania, transforms plastic bottles from the streets and canals of Haiti and Honduras into the most responsible fabric on the planet.

“At Thread, we believe that dignified jobs cure poverty—and our fabric creates those jobs,” said Thread CEO and Founder Ian Rosenberger. “Our partnership with Timberland marks a seismic shift in the fashion industry, combining Timberland’s large supply chain and loyal customer base with Thread’s responsible, transparent approach to creating premium fabrics and vital jobs in the developing world. The Timberland x Thread collection is a major step towards improving the way our clothes are made.”
