$1 Billion Price Tag for Power Outages in Pakistan

Power and energy shortages in Pakistan are responsible for the loss of $1 billion in textile and garment exports, according to Ahsan Bashir, Chairman of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association.

The electricity shortages have not only disrupted work in garment factories,  but also in spinning mills—some 40% of spinning mills in Pakistan’s Punjab region have closed because of the shortages, which in turn leads to insufficient production of yarn and fabric.

Despite the interruptions, Pakistan’s textile industry grew 8.55%, and exported $500 million in the first half of the fiscal year. The President of Pakistan has promised reliable power in 2013, Mr. Bashir told  Fibre2Fashion’s India news desk, and the industry now has a target of $14-15 billion this year.
