Alex Apparel Group Names Colleen Kelly CEO

Leading women’s evening wear designer and manufacturer Alex Apparel Group, Inc., which operates the Alex Evenings and Kay Unger brands, has named Colleen Kelly its chief executive officer. Kelly will replace company co-founder Dean Brizel who will stay on as chairman.

“Alex Apparel is a stronger company today and we continue to grow our business and strengthen our partnerships with department stores. Colleen’s appointment is a reflection of the momentum we are building in our business,” Brizel said. “I am pleased to have led this company for over 25 years and, as Chairman and major shareholder, I will remain active in helping to guide the company’s strategic direction going forward.”

An industry veteran with more than 30 years of experience in apparel and retail — namely in growing both public and private companies — Kelly was most recently president of Kahn Lucas, one of the largest girl’s apparel manufacturers, where she worked since 2011. Prior to that, she was group president of wholesale North America for Tommy Hilfiger for five years and spearheaded the brand’s exclusive partnership with Macy’s. Kelly also worked for Warnaco Inc. from 2002-2006 as president of Calvin Klein Jeans, and from 2000-2002, she was a senior executive with Donna Karan International.

Commenting on her new position, Kelly said, “Alex Evenings and Kay Unger have been leaders in designing elegant women’s evening wear for over 25 years and I am very excited about this new and challenging opportunity. I look forward to working with Dean and the company’s strong management team to build on our past success.”

Peter Shabecoff, managing partner at Atlantic Street Capital and a member of the company’s board of directors, said, “We are very pleased with the company’s growth since our investment three years ago and we are excited to have a leader with Colleen’s proven track record of building effective teams, major apparel brands, and strong profitable businesses to serve as CEO. We look forward to working with her to continue to build the company that has grown under Dean’s leadership.”

Alex Apparel Group designs, sources and distributes its women’s evening wear dresses and separates in more than 3,400 stores nationwide.
