Alibaba Continues Global Dominance with Bigcommerce Partnership

As we settle into the new year, our Sourcing Summit Companion Report looks ahead at ways to optimize processes and performance.

In its latest effort to own the global e-commerce space, Alibaba Group announced a partnership Wednesday that will allow online retailers access to top-rated wholesale suppliers and products in China through an integrated shopping experience.

Alibaba.com, the Group’s leading platform for wholesale trade is now working with e-commerce platform Bigcommerce to offer companies a way to simplify cross-border trading. The Alibaba.com Wholesale solution will be available to Bigcommerce’s 70,000 stores, and merchants will have access to purchase more than 30,000 products from roughly 300 of Alibaba.com’s Gold Suppliers in China.

“Competing and succeeding online starts with having a business plan and strategy for sourcing quality products,” said Eddie Machaalani, Bigcommerce co-founder and CEO. “For many of our merchants, Alibaba.com represents a tremendous opportunity to tap into the world’s largest supplier network — whether to start selling or expand an existing business — without taking on unnecessary risk or sacrificing margins.”

As part of the partnership, e-tailers buying from Alibaba.com will have access to a custom-built application that provides a catalog of wholesale suppliers in China in a secure, familiar interface so they can quickly find and buy new products at competitive prices to sell online.

According to Bigcommerce, its clients using the Alibaba.com Wholesale app will benefit from: integrated search customized for e-commerce merchants; transparent purchasing from suppliers with access to details on pricing, availability, minimum order requirements and supplier contact information and ratings; customized pricing that allows the retailer to select wholesale pricing based on fastest delivery time or lowest possible price; and payment protection as all orders are backed by Alibaba.com’s Secure Payment services.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the global economy and it’s important that we help them to grow and stay competitive,” said Michael Lee, international business development and marketing director for Alibaba.com. “This new application provides Bigcommerce merchants with direct access to Alibaba.com wholesale suppliers, offering competitive prices to realize better profit margins.”
